Costa Rica is a pet-friendly country, and traveling with your pet is indeed possible. However, there are specific guidelines and requirements you need to be aware of to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for both you and your pet.
But first, it’s so important to make a difference between “pet” and “companion dog”
What is a companion dog?
A companion dog is a source of emotional support and comfort to its owner or owners. These dogs are not trained for specific tasks or work roles like service dogs or working dogs but are instead valued for their ability to provide companionship, affection, and often a sense of security to their human companions.
Companion dogs come in various breeds and sizes, and their personalities can range widely. Many people choose companion dogs based on their temperament, energy level, and compatibility with their lifestyle. Some companion dogs are highly affectionate and outgoing, while others may be more reserved or independent.

Can I travel to Costa Rica with my pet?
Some hotels are pet-friendly, and some not. Nosara Vacation Rental has a strict policy of no pets, mainly due to our location right next to the Ostional Nosara-Guiones Wildlife Refuge. We do allow service dogs and dogs that provide emotional, psychiatric, or cognitive support to people. But, to say “yes” to your friend, you have to comply with the following:
Contact us 72 hours (at least) before your arrival
At that time, you will be asked to provide:
- Certificate of training or behavior of the animal.
- Form or letter from the accredited mental health professional.
- Document or vaccination card of the animal.
Animal behavior and restrictions during the stay.
- Not allowed: Grunt or barking, biting or trying to bite, jump over people.
- They must always be under owner’s control by means of a strap and/or harness no more than five feet long.
- They can’t be inside the pool.
- One emotional support dog per vacation rental will be allowed.
- Any animal that is dirty or has a bad smell will not be accepted.
- All types of damage caused to the facilities will be charged, including deodorization and/or fumigation.
